OWI, possession of marijuana among the recommended charges after pedestrians struck in Cedarburg

CEDARBURG -- A 37-year-old Milwaukee man was taken into custody for allegedly striking two pedestrians with his vehicle as the Strawberry Festival in Cedarburg was coming to an end on Sunday, June 26th.

Cedarburg police are recommending the following charges in this case:

Police say the suspect was headed northbound on Washington Avenue, and turned onto Western Road, where he crossed the center line -- striking another vehicle.

His vehicle then went over the curb, and struck two pedestrians on the sidewalk.

The two victims, a 65-year-old woman and a 38-year-old woman, both from Milwaukee, suffered serious injuries, but it is believed they will survive.

Police say the suspect was taken to the hospital after this incident for a medical screening -- after saying on scene he is diabetic. The results have not yet come back.

A witness captured the aftermath of this incident on his cell phone.

"I heard a loud crash.  I saw at least two women flying through the air," the witness said.

The witness says both pedestrians, two women, were badly hurt.

"The one woman was screaming. The other woman wasn`t even moving.  She looked like she was in bad shape," the witness said.

A portion of Western Road, between Washington and Hanover was shut down for three hours while the investigation was underway.

Cedarburg Police Sgt. John Stroik told FOX6 News the driver of a white pickup truck was arrested at the scene. Video shot by the witness shows a man being placed into handcuffs.

"He was pretty irate.  He was screaming," the witness said.

The witness told FOX6 News the man believed to be the driver of the truck was yelling that he had a medical condition. He can be heard yelling "I'm diabetic" in the witness' video.

"Seemed kind of delirious," the witness said.

The Ozaukee County district attorney and an accident reconstruction team were called to the scene.

It was an upsetting end to what was a fun weekend for many -- enjoying strawberry-themed treats at the popular Strawberry Festival.

"Very sad that two people are injured, that`s for sure.  It`s unfortunate that someone feels they are able to drive under the influence -- and then you add 100,000 people walking around, streets are closed. You have one-ways, and people who maybe just aren`t used to the area," Holly Gonwa said.
