Wildlife Rehabilitation Center caring for Mallard who swallowed fish hook -- and you can help!

MILWAUKEE -- The Wisconsin Humane Society's Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is caring for a juvenile Mallard found to have swallowed a fish hook -- and you can help with his care.

According to Wildlife Rehabilitation Center officials, the hook was embedded in the Mallard's neck tissue -- dangerously close to his aorta. It had to be surgically removed by Dr. Bloss and staff at Brook-Falls Veterinary Hospital and Exotic Care.

Officials say the Mallard's post-surgery recovery is going well, and he's expected to make a full recovery.

Wildlife Rehabilitation Center officials posted a photo of the Mallard five days after his surgery, and a photo of the X-ray showing the fish hook.

They are reminding folks to please be sure to safely dispose of fishing line -- even if you weren't the one to leave it. They say as great as this Mallard's recovery is, prevention would have been our (and his) first preference.
