After chance meeting, $300K raised for teen who offered to carry groceries in exchange for food

MEMPHIS -- An update to a story about a hungry teenager that is sure to bring a smile to your face. A stranger has helped him and his mother get back on their feet after a chance meeting at a Kroger grocery store.

"I've never been a part of anything like this," Matt White said.

This story began when 15-year-old Chauncy Black approached White at the Kroger store.

"Something told me to go there and ask this guy if I can help take his groceries to the car," Black said.

All Black asked was that White would help him out -- and buy him some donuts for dinner. White felt compelled to take Black on a shopping spree.

He learned the 15-year-old boy is a straight-A student who does odd jobs to support his sick mother.

"It's God's heart -- when God speaks to you. That's all the why you have to have," White said.

When White dropped Black off at home, what he saw brought the grown man to tears. Black and his mother had nothing.

"Just felt this overwhelming humility for his situation," White said.

"Sleeping on the floor...I had an air mattress, but it burst," Black said.

White wrote about the chance meeting on Facebook, and started a GoFundMe.com account to raise money for Black and his mother.

After White posted a video of Black, the world fell in love with the soft-spoken teenager who had never had a chance.

In just two weeks, more than $90,000 was raised.

"It's climbing at a speed I can't keep up with," White said.

WHBQ was there when White gave Black and his mother, Barbara the most amazing news yet.

"You're gonna get a house. A nice house," White said.

"I don't know what to say, what to do. Chauncy told me not to cry -- but I might break down in tears," Barbara Martin said.

"I appreciate it so much that I can't appreciate it no more," Black said.

They say guardian angels come in all forms, but while Chauncy Black says this angel saved him, White says it's the other way around.

"It's like a whole new purpose in life," White said.

In 15 days, more than $300,000 has been raised for Chauncy and his mother.
