Milwaukee County to consider $7.8M request for bus rapid transit route

MILWAUKEE COUNTY -- The proposed bus rapid transit line could get near $7.8 million in next year's Milwaukee County budget.

That is if a request sent to the Milwaukee County Board is approved.

The total cost of the nine-mile system between downtown Milwaukee and Wauwatosa is estimated around $45 million.

The new route is touted as being faster and more frequent than current bus service -- running in dedicated lanes with the ability to change traffic signals and avoid red lights.

Milwaukee County transportation officials plan to apply for a $36 million federal grant to pay for most of the system.
