Near perfect weather for Opening Day at Maier Festival Park: "You wait all year for Summerfest to come"

MILWAUKEE -- The excitement was palpable Wednesday, June 29th at Maier Festival Park as Summerfest 2016 officially got underway.

Headliners Wednesday night included Willie Nelson, Martin Garrix, Fitz and the Tantrums, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Dustin Lynch, Weird Al Yankovic, Morris Day and the Time, and at the Marcus Amphitheater, Selena Gomez.

It could not have been a more perfect day and night for Summerfest's Opening Day -- with abundant sunshine and temperatures in the low 70s.

Cresta and Kelly LaFever

Cresta and Kelly LaFever took a moment to just chill and enjoy it on Wednesday.

"People watch, listen to music, eat some food," Kelly LaFever said.

"We're kind of just letting the wind take us," Cresta LaFever said.

They found a spot on the rocks, where the sounds of Lake Michigan mixed with sounds from the Summerfest stages.

"It's like the perfect place, you know?" Kelly LaFever said.

Summerfest

Some came to Summerfest for the ambiance -- most, for the music.

"We've just been walking around, having fun," Diane Thomas said.

"We went on the Sky Glider and the ferris wheel," Grace Heisz said.

Some on hand at Maier Festival Park were so young -- they didn't even recognize the names of some of the headliners, like Willie Nelson!

Summerfest

You don't need to be a music geek to have fun and enjoy the food and the weather during Summerfest's 11-day run.

"You wait all year for Summerfest to come," Diane Thomas said.
