Fight leads to gunfire, now two men charged in fatal shooting

MILWAUKEE -- Two men are now charged in connection with the fatal shooting of John Garrett near 7th and Center on Saturday, July 9th. The accused are 25-year-old Dominique Armstrong and 22-year-old Rilo Spears.

Spears is charged with first-degree reckless homicide. Armstrong faces a charge of harboring or aiding a felon.

According to the criminal complaint, two groups of people were exchanging words outside a home near 7th and Center. A witness told police that "neighbors began making phone calls trying to recruit others to come assist them in a fight." The complaint goes on to say, "A few minutes later Dominique Armstrong and his cousin Rilo Spears arrived on the scene. (The witness) noticed that Rilo Spears had a gun."

The witness told police his neighbor John Garrett "was the person causing the problems and then both Dominique and Rilo approached John. Rilo raised the gun and discharged it several times toward John." Garrett was fatally shot and a 13-year-old girl suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Armstrong and Spears then left the scene.

If convicted, Spears faces up to 60 years in prison. Armstrong faces up to ten years in prison and $25,000 in fines.
