"Amazing:" Aircraft enthusiasts take to the skies of Grafton for 27th annual Fun Fly

OZAUKEE COUNTY -- From the old classic planes to the drones of today, dozens of aircraft took to the skies of Grafton Saturday, July 16th.

"The amazing thing about these planes, just like the full scale, there's very little difference," said Greg Williams, Fun Fly coordinator.

Some of them go as fast as 200 miles-per-hour. Some have a wingspan of 5-20 feet.

"This is around 35% size of what the real one is," said Tim Kunath, pilot.

Tim Kunath has been flying model planes for ten years.

"You want to have a day with low winds and obviously something that's not raining," said Kunath.

The other guys who control the planes via radio waves from the ground range from commercial airline pilots to engineers -- salespeople and retirees who would rather avoid the expense, hassle and loneliness of flying a real plane.

"It's a respect for history. It's about aviation," said Williams.

Each pilot is licensed with the AMA and each aircraft is registered with the FAA.

"That's relatively new regulation. It has a lot to do with the misuse of quadcopters. We do not object to that at all, we support that," Williams said.

Spectators can see the hobby of radio-controlled flying up close as the Astrowings hosted their 27th annual Fun Fly.

"The coolest part is getting to see the planes fly and having them zoom off into the field," said Ryan Krumenauer, spectator.

This is more than just a Fun Fly, it's also a charity fundraiser for the local Boy Scouts Troop 840.
