"We want to keep them connected:" We Energies works with customers to stay cool

MILWAUKEE -- With the dangerous temperatures on the way, We Energies is making some special exceptions.

Cathy Schulze, We Energies

"We want to work with our customers. We want to keep them connected," said Cathy Schulze of We Energies.

While the pending wave of heat is causing concerns, state law puts protections in place to prevent the utility from cutting off customers who cannot afford to pay their bills.

"When things get elevated to the level where the National Weather Service is issuing an alert, we suspend disconnections to our customers," Schulze said.

For those customers who already had their service disconnected for lack of payment, extenuating circumstances including certain health issues may warrant re-connection despite the inability to pay.

"Customers in those circumstances are urged to call us. We work with them. There are extensions that we can put in place to get them reconnected," Schulze said.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat WARNING set to take effect on Thursday, July 21st at noon and continue through Friday, July 22nd at 7:00 p.m. for most of southeastern Wisconsin. Sheboygan, Fond du Lac, Ozaukee and Washington Counties will be in a heat ADVISORY.
