Pavement buckled: Lanes have reopened on northbound US 41/45 near Good Hope Rd.

MILWAUKEE -- The two right lanes of northbound US 41/45 -- were shut down for hours near Good Hope Road Wednesday, July 27th due to buckling in the pavement.

According to Greg Heisel, highway maintenance manager for Milwaukee County, around 11:30 a.m., the Highway Department was made aware of the buckling.

Upon arrival, crews found the whole 10' long by 12' wide slab of concrete was buckled and had to begin the process of using saws to cut out the concrete.

Around 1:30 p.m., they removed the last of the concrete and were working to fill the space with eight to 10 tons of hot asphalt.

During the concrete removal process and pouring of the asphalt, lanes two and three were closed.

Once the asphalt was in place, lane two reopened.

Lane three remains closed so the asphalt can cool and set.

The lanes reopened shortly before 5 p.m.

This is the first instance of road buckling in Milwaukee County this year. Heisel says that this occurs when water gets underneath the pavement and the heat causes expansion and pressure to build up to the point of when the pressure has no release it pushes up the concrete and the buckling occurs.
