MILWAUKEE -- Firefighters and police officers are in the business of saving lives. Friday, July 29th they responded to an important call -- and they're asking you to join them.

From rookies...

"Thought I'd give it a shot because I've never done it before," said Brandon Mathe, donor.

To veterans...

"I usually give like every eight weeks," said Dean Wassenberg, donor.

The Milwaukee Fire and Police Academy filled up with people reporting for duty.

"It was a worthwhile cause for everybody," said Wassenberg.

They're responding to a critical call: the need for blood donations.

"We have a need. Blood center has to collect more than 800 blood units per day and so we can't do that without the support of the community," Todd Coleman, blood program consultant.

The Milwaukee Police and Fire Departments are joining forces to give back by hosting a community blood drive in partnership with the BloodCenter of Wisconsin.

"It's the first time we've come together in this capacity," said Coleman.

The reasons for donating are different for everyone.

"Hopeful to be a paramedic so I thought being on the other end of the needle would be a good way to get an experience," said Mathe.

"My daughter, she had several operations and always got blood," said Wassenberg.

The mission remains the same.

"What we're doing here today is trying to save lives," said Coleman.

It's a mission that gives everyone the opportunity to make a difference.

"People need the blood. So, if it helps great," said Wassenberg.

"I encourage a whole bunch of people to do it," said Mathe.

Saving lives one donation at a time.

"Remember, the life you save could end up being your own," said Coleman.

If you weren't able to get to this blood drive, the BloodCenter of Wisconsin is happy to schedule an appointment with you down the road.
