Remembering lives lost: Family and friends come together to honor man shot, killed 1 year ago

MILWAUKEE -- Remembering lives lost. The family of a teen shot and killed last year, held an event to honor his life and other victims of violence on Saturday, July 30th.

Inside the St. Marcus Lutheran School gym, a fitting tribute for a teen who loved the game.

"Through basketball is how we were able to honor him," said Demetrius Rice, Young's stepfather.

18-year-old Angelo Young was shot and killed July 22nd, 2015. The recent high school graduate was on his way home from work when it happened.

No arrests have been made in the case.

"You'd never think this would happen to an individual like that. Especially so young with a promising future," said Rice.

Since that last year, Young's family has been hurting.

"It's been a blur. It's been a big dream. You just wish you could wake up from it, but you never do," said Rice.

On Saturday, the community came together raising money for a reward to help find Young's killer.

"Somebody should be brought to justice because he wasn't a bad dude," said Garry Hurn, Young's older brother.

They also honored other lives lost to violence. The names of the victims were posted on the walls of the gym.

"The power to help change the condition of our community lies in the people," said Milwaukee Alderwoman Milele Coggs.

They spread a message of love, hoping through positivity they will find answers and prevent future violence.

"We just hope and pray that one day the individuals that took his life come forward," said Rice.

The family wants to make this event an annual tradition. Meantime, they continue to ask the community if anyone has information about Young's death to call police.
