Yarn graffiti in Milwaukee raises awareness about Alzheimer's disease

MILWAUKEE -- Graffiti has popped up at a downtown Milwaukee plaza. The corner of Old World Third and Wisconsin is covered in knitted color.

More than 50 guerrilla knitters have been at work for months -- knitting and crocheting different items for display at the plaza.

The display is meant to be a bold statement to bring in foot traffic to an art exhibit, raising awareness about Alzheimer's disease.

"I wouldn't even begin to estimate the amount of yarn used. The only criteria was that everyone used the color purple, because purple is the color of the Alzheimer's Association, so as you go around, you'll notice that every project uses purple," Nancy Armitage with the Memories in the Making program said.

The yarn graffiti project and the "Memories in the Making" exhibit will be on display in August and September.
