New program: Users looking to quit can drop off drugs at Delafield PD; no questions asked

DELAFIELD -- Delafield police are launching a new program that will allow people to drop off drugs and/or drug paraphernalia -- no questions asked.

According to a statement from Delafield Police Chief Erik Kehl, the program is an effort to assist those addicted to controlled substances who would like to end their dependence on them.

It is called the "Anonymous Disposal" program.

Beginning Monday, August 8th, Delafield police will take illegal controlled substances and drug paraphernalia from anyone wishing to voluntarily dispose of the items. You can drop off items anonymously and without fear of prosecution.

Those wishing to take advantage of this program must come to the Delafield Police Department and notify an employee that you wish to abandon drugs and/or drug paraphernalia.

The matter will then be handled by a sworn member of the Delafield Police Department -- and no effort will be made to identify the person turning these items in.

The drugs and drug paraphernalia collected will be documented and destroyed by police. A list of local treatment options will be given to anyone dropping off items as part of this program.

There are some limitations to this program.

Evidence of the production and/or distribution of controlled substances or hazardous materials used to produce certain types of controlled substances won't be accepted due to risk to Delafield Police Department personnel and city employees, and the expense of storing and eliminating these types of items.

Police say this program does not apply to drugs or drug paraphernalia found during the course of official investigations or police activity.

Police said in the statement the program is "an attempt to provide an opportunity for those wishing to end their dependence by giving them a safe place to dispose of contraband and learn what local resources are available for treatment."
