Man suspected in missing kids case now charged with 'resisting an officer'

Emmanuel Stevens

MILWAUKEE -- 25-year-old Emmanuel Stevens of Milwaukee is charged with one count of resisting an officer. This, in the wake of an incident in which he was suspected of taking two children, ages five and three, from their mother, his girlfriend.

The children had been last seen on Saturday morning, July 30th near 28th and Kilbourn in Milwaukee. They were found safe Monday morning.

According to the criminal complaint, officers spotted a green SUV around 8:00 a.m. that matched the description of the vehicle tied to the case involving the missing children. It was parked at a Citgo gas station near 37th and Hampton. A man walking away from the SUV also matched the description of the person they suspected took the children.

The complaint indicates when police approached Stevens at the gas station, he swore at them and walked away. One officer attempted to stop him -- and Stevens continued to walk away. Then, with other officers on the scene, Stevens "grabbed (one officer) and physically lifted him off the ground and threw him down." At that point, the complaint says another officer "deployed a Taser, which caused the defendant to face (the officer) with closed fists." A Taser was deployed a second time, and Stevens fell to the ground. He was taken into custody.

If convicted, Stevens faces up to nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines.
