Woman struck, killed by hit-and-run driver while crossing the street near 91st & Appleton



MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police say an 64-year-old Milwaukee woman was struck by a vehicle and killed on Thursday night, August 11th near 91st and Appleton. The victim has been identified as Mary Wills.

It happened around 10 p.m.

The investigation revealed that the victim was in a crosswalk, crossing N. 91st Street, when she was hit by a small, dark colored SUV. The SUV fled the scene traveling north on 91st Street.

When officers arrived on scene, they found the victim suffering from multiple internal injuries.

Concerned residents gathered as emergency responders tended to the woman.

"Every time I'm on the window or on the balcony I just have a glimpse of her laying," said Charmaine West, lives nearby.

Charmaine West is troubled by the incident.

"Last night my mom and stepdad were on the balcony and they were talking and I heard a rumble and my mom just screamed and I panicked because she screamed so loud," said West.

West then saw the heartbreaking scene.

"I was thinking oh my God, this woman is in the middle of the street. She is dying. Somebody help her -- I was calling 911," said West.

Meanwhile her stepfather tried to get to the victim quickly.

"He didn't think, he just jumped, he landed on his back and fractured his spine," said West.

He attempting to help and catch a glimpse of the suspect.

"Drive over the median just kept going, a black truck," West said.

Milwaukee police say the victim was hit by a small, dark-colored SUV with tinted windows.

Emergency crews attempted life-saving efforts.

"They did try for a very long time and they tried to revive her," said West.

The woman died at the scene.

In an area with a lot of pedestrians, shaken up neighbors want drivers to slow down and someone to speak up.

"Whoever you are that did this please come forward and turn yourself in. Have a heart," said Vervee Johnson, concerned resident.

According to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner, the victim died from multiple blunt force injuries.

Police say the investigation is on-going and they continue to seek a suspect in the incident.
