Milwaukee Business Journal: Harley-Davidson agrees to $15 million settlement with EPA

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Business Journal reports that Harley-Davidson Inc. has agreed to pay $15 million to settle a complaint that the company manufactured and sold devices that increased motorcycles’ emissions of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides to levels in excess of federal clean air standards.

The settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Justice calls for Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson (NYSE: HOG) to pay a civil penalty of $12 million and to spend $3 million to mitigate air pollution through a project to replace conventional wood stoves with cleaner-burning stoves in local communities. The company will also stop selling the devices and buy back the devices in dealerships inventory and destroy them, according to the EPA.
