"If they try anything, I'll beat them with a gun:" Former MPD officer accused of threatening mayor at City Hall

MILWAUKEE -- A former Milwaukee police officer is accused of making threats at Milwaukee's City Hall. The 48-year-old man was arrested after allegedly claiming he had a gun. Police say he was found to be armed with an ax.

Gilberto Collado

According to a criminal complaint, Gilberto Collado, who is now charged with one count of disorderly conduct and one count of possession of cocaine for the incident that happened on August 18th at City Hall, walked up to the information counter with a bag, and told a worker he had recently been arrested for DUI.

Collado indicated he is a former city employee -- and officials with the Milwaukee Police Department have confirmed Collado is a former MPD officer.

Prosecutors say while he was speaking to the worker at City Hall, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett walked by with his security detail, and, according to the worker's statement to investigators, Collado said something to the effect of "if they try anything, I'll beat them with a gun. I have a gun in my bag," in reference to Mayor Barrett and his security.

Collado allegedly said he was leaving, but told the worker he'd be back.

City Hall

Investigators say they found Collado a short time later, outside the Chase Bank near the corner of Wisconsin and Water -- about two blocks away from City Hall.

Officers confiscated his bag, and inside, there was no gun -- but Collado was allegedly carrying a one-and-a-half-pound black camp ax. Also inside the bag, police say they found a clear plastic sandwich bag containing an off-white chunky substance, which tested positive for cocaine, weighing .24 grams.

Online court records show Collado pleaded not guilty during his initial appearance on Saturday, August 20th and was released on a $500 signature bond.

FOX6 News stopped by his home on Monday, August 22nd. No one answered the door, but loud music was coming from inside.

Officials with the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office had "no comment" about this case.

A spokeswoman for Mayor Barrett did not return calls from FOX6 News.

Meanwhile, Collado has been ordered to have no contact with City Hall, no possession or use of controlled substances, and he can possess no weapons.

He will next be in court on September 26th.
