1 in critical condition after home explosion in Fitchburg; cause under investigation

FITCHBURG -- Emergency crews responded to a home explosion Thursday evening, August 25th in Fitchburg.

It happened at Fish Hatchery and Cheryl, according to FOX6's sister station WMTV.

One person was hurt -- a man in his 50s. He was pulled from the debris and taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to WMTV. Remarkably, there were no fatalities.

The cause of the explosion is unclear at this point. Fitchburg's fire chief told WMTV it's unclear whether it was caused by a gas leak, but he did say gas was leaking from the home that exploded when emergency crews arrived.

WMTV was told at least 20 other homes in the area were damaged. Some were displaced -- and the Red Cross was on scene to assist those people.
