"To get people employed:" $1 million in training grants will help Milwaukee residents land the job they want

Navigating the job market to land the career you want can be a bit overwhelming for anyone.

"The goal is certainly to reach people where they are," Ray Allen, Department of Workforce Development secretary said.

City and state leaders are hoping "Job Center Access Points" will help Milwaukee residents do just that.

"Obviously the end goal is to try and find employment for as many people that come through that access point as possible," Allen said.

Allen said the first Job Center Access Point at the Employ Milwaukee's HIRE Center attracted about 35 people. He said he hopes those numbers will grow as more and more sites are added and awareness increases.

"I think we're building up momentum. I think you'll see way more people here today," Allen said Tuesday, September 20th at Parklawn Assembly of God church.

These Job Center Access Points are meant to help those who want to find work connect with potential employers and learn about other services they may qualify for.

"This is a place that you're going to be able to come to be able to find out what jobs are available, what skill opportunities you could potentially get in the pipeline to get, you know, to get some kind of training for," Senator Lena Taylor said.

On Tuesday, Secretary Allen announced $1 million in training grants to help Milwaukee residents prepare for and land the jobs they want -- even if they don't yet have the necessary skills.

"The employers come with job openings and commitments that they're going to hire and we will then assist them with the training of those individuals. The whole goal here is to get people employed," Allen said.
