Woman critically hurt in hit-and-run crash wakes up from coma; police search for striking driver
MILWAUKEE -- A 27-year-old woman critically wounded in a hit-and-run crash that happened on October 5th near Cesar Chavez Drive and Greenfield Avenue in Milwaukee woke up from a medically-induced coma at the hospital on Monday, October 10th.

FOX6 News spoke with Amy Mayek's sister, who said Mayek, a mother of two, is still very confused, and doctors won't know the extent of any brain damage for quite some time.
Police say Mayek was crossing the street around 2:00 a.m. on October 5th when a vehicle struck her. The vehicle then fled the scene.

Mayek suffered very serious injuries and was treated at the scene by the Milwaukee Fire Department. She was taken to a hospital where she was listed in critical condition.
The incident was captured by surveillance cameras on Mian's Oil gas station.

The video shows Mayek crossing the street early Wednesday morning -- appearing to stop for a moment before she was struck by the vehicle. The impact caused Mayek to fly into the air. The video shows her eventually landing in the middle of the intersection as the vehicle turned right and fled the scene.

"I just want my sister back," Mayek's sister, Jennifer Rivas said.
Rivas said on Monday the days since this incident have involved tears, prayers and finally -- a little relief.
"She has some memory. We don`t know how much. Fingers crossed that physical therapy and all the medical help that we get, that she`ll be able to lead a normal life," Rivas said.

The road to recovery, however, will likely take years, as Mayek suffered multiple broken bones and brain trauma in the hit-and-run.
"She just looked really scared by the car coming and stopped and didn`t know what to do, and for nobody to stop, they didn`t care. They just left," Rivas said.

Rivas said she hopes someone from the community will step forward who knows something that could help police in this case.
"She`s my only sister, and I`ve always felt like a second parent to her. I`ve always tried to help guide her. I`ve always tried to help her with everything she`s needed," Rivas said.

Again -- police continue to search for the hit-and-run driver in this case.
Meanwhile, Mayek's sister tells FOX6 News they have set up a GoFundMe.com account to raise money to help with medical expenses.
