Paperwork filed: AG appeals ruling that overturned Brendan Dassey's conviction

MADISON -- Attorney General Brad Schimel filed the opening brief in federal court on Wednesday, October 19th -- appealing a ruling that overturned Brendan Dassey's conviction.

Schimel filed the notice of appeal back on September 9th. On Wednesday, the first documents of the appeal were filed.

In August, a federal court ruled Dassey had been coerced by investigators into confessing to helping his uncle, Steven Avery, kill Teresa Halbach. At that time, the judge ordered Dassey be released unless there was an appeal or retrial.

With that appeal now filed, the 7th Circuit Court will decide if the ruling stands.
