MILWAUKEE — Drivers passing through downtown Milwaukee may encounter some road closures on Wednesday morning, November 2nd.

Officials at the City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works (DPW) say they will be shutting down East Wells Street between North Water Street and North Broadway to most through traffic from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. That is so DPW crews can place the annual City Christmas tree in front of City Hall.

Eastbound Wells Street traffic will need to turn left or right at North Water Street. Westbound Wells Street traffic will need to turn left or right at N. Broadway. One exception: People who park in the BMO Harris parking structure will be allowed access at mid-block on E. Wells St.

In addition, only one northbound lane on North Water Street between East Wells Street and East Kilbourn Avenue will be open to through traffic during this same time frame. Northbound traffic will be able to turn right onto E. Wells St.

Traffic in and around this area will be affected as follows:

  • Northbound traffic on Water St.: One traffic lane open between Wells and Kilbourn.
  • Southbound traffic on Water St.: Both lanes open to traffic
  • Eastbound traffic on Wells St.: Traffic diverted north and south onto Water Street
  • Westbound traffic on Wells St.: No access unless parking in the BMO Harris parking structure

Traffic should return to normal by 12:00 p.m.
