Republican Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner re-elected in race for 5th Congressional District

DELAFIELD -- Republican Jim Sensenbrenner on Tuesday, November 8th was re-elected to the House of Representatives in the race for the 5th Congressional District seat, the Associated Press reported.

After serving 10 years in the Wisconsin Legislature, Sensenbrenner ran for a U.S. House seat and was elected in November of 1978. He has been reelected since 1980.

Sensenbrenner faced Democrat Khary Penebaker on November 8th.

As of 9:15 p.m., Sensenbrenner had 187,435 votes to Penebaker's 75,465 -- with 73% of precincts reporting.

There was a lot of cheering going on at the Delafield Brew Haus in Waukesha County -- the site of the Waukesha Republican election night Watch Party -- as results came in.

All eyes were on the presidential race -- with some Trump supporters saying Tuesday night they were very hopeful, while others said they were cautiously optimistic.

Waukesha County of course has a heavy conservative voter turnout and supporters said that could play a key role in how Wisconsin swings, especially when it comes to the down ballot races like the U.S. Senate race -- pitting incumbent Ron Johnson against Democrat Russ Feingold.

Johnson was projected the winner Tuesday night, and early results from the county clerk showed Trump getting 60 percent of the vote in Waukesha County.

"As goes Waukesha, oftentimes, so goes the state, so there are a lot of people that are active in the party down here. As prior elections prove, we can sometimes sway the state," Mark Kelly said.

Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel was on hand at the Delafield Brew Haus. He said his office hadn't received any complaints of problems at the polls.
