An important lesson about veterans: Rose Glen Elementary raises money for Fisher House Wisconsin

WAUKESHA — As Veterans Day approaches, students are learning about the importance of the men and women that serve our country. Kids at a Waukesha school got an extra special lesson thanks to Fisher House Wisconsin.

Angie Christianson of Fisher House Wisconsin gives a special presentation to students at Rose Glen Elementary.

In October, students at Rose Glen Elementary took part in a special presentation. Angie Christianson appeared as a special guest speaker. Christianson volunteers for the Board of Directors for Fisher House Wisconsin.

Fisher House provides veterans' families a free place to stay when their loved one is getting treatment at the VA hospital.

It's a place Rose Glen Elementary parents and staff wanted their kids to know more about.

"The more we looked at it the more we thought what a great way for our school to make connections to a community resource right here," said Melissa Nikolic, the principal at Rose Glen Elementary.

Christianson told kids in all grade levels about the what Fisher House does for veterans and their families. She explained the resources it provides, how children can get involved and how they help educate others.

"Just so they know that there`s a place that they can go, their families can go and educate even their parents about it," Christianson said.

The kids at Rose Glen Elementary are supporting Fisher House Wisconsin in a big way. The school hosted a walk to  raise money to donate to Fisher House.

A few weeks after learning about Fisher House, students marched through the school to salute their veterans.

"I think it's important our kids know how much our military really does for them because they help to keep us safe and all that we have in our community is because of them," Nikolic said.

Christianson hopes the students at Rose Glen Elementary don't forget about the importance of the men and women who serve in the military and that Fisher House is there to help.

"At their age, they may or may not have a parent in the military. They may or may not have had a grandparent in the military, but they may go in the military someday," Christianson said.
