Relief for commuters: Zipper merge on eastbound I-94 will be removed Monday night!

MILWAUKEE COUNTY -- Drivers who use I-94 eastbound will notice a pleasant change Tuesday morning, November 22nd.

The zipper merge near Sunny Slope Road will be removed Monday night, and lanes will be shifted onto the new pavement.

That means all three lanes of traffic will be open. That's expected to ease regular backups in the area.

"We only had two-thirds capacity on a freeway system that was already nearing capacity. The good news is, you're going to see a great improvement to your flow of traffic eastbound on I-94," Mike Pyritz with the DOT said.

DOT officials said even though quite a bit of work remains on the Zoo Interchange Project, they don't plan to use another zipper merge during construction.
