GOP's Dan Kapanke files for recount in State Senate race

MADISON — Republican Dan Kapanke has officially filed for a recount in his bid to unseat state Senate Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission's Diane Lowe said Kapanke's campaign filed that request Wednesday morning. Kapanke's campaign said he decided to request a recount because the vote margin was so close. Returns show Shilling with a 56-vote lead.

According to the Elections Commission, the four counties in the 32nd Senate District — Crawford, La Crosse, Monroe and Vernon — will have to start counting no later than Monday. The recount could take three to six days.

Despite the uncertainty, Senate Democrats on Tuesday chose Shilling as their leader again for the upcoming legislative session.
