Madison musician was to perform at Oakland warehouse that caught fire

Officials say at least nine people are dead and several are unaccounted for after a fire at a building in Oakland.

MADISON — A Madison-based electronic musician was supposed to perform at an Oakland, California, warehouse where a deadly fire broke out at a late-night dance party.

Joel Shanahan performs as Golden Donna. The Capital Times reports Shanahan posted on Facebook that he is safe.

In his post Saturday morning, Shanahan said he does not have “the words to describe the terror and heartbreak” that he feels.

Officials say the death toll from the fire has risen to 24. Officials anticipate that the number will rise.

Friday night’s event was to feature Golden Donna’s 100 Percent Silk West Coast tour. Officials believed 50 to 100 people may have been in attendance.
