Sheriff's officials: Driving too fast for conditions led to crash involving 4 vehicles in Washington Co.

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- Two people had to be taken to the hospital following a crash involving four vehicles that happened Sunday morning, December 4th -- and Washington County Sheriff's officials say driving too fast for conditions amid falling snow led to this crash.

It happened shortly before 10:00 a.m. on I-41 at Cedar Creek Road in the Town of Polk.

Sheriff's officials say an investigation revealed an 18-year-old from Neenah, driving a vehicle headed northbound lost control and struck a guardrail. A 24-year-old Manitowoc woman headed northbound attempted to avoid the collision and lost control -- sliding through a grassy median and entering the southbound lanes of traffic. Her vehicle was then struck by a third vehicle -- headed southbound -- driven by a 33-year-old woman from South Milwaukee.

A fourth vehicle, driven by a 75-year-old woman from Glendale was able to avoid the collision, but struck a southbound guardrail.

Two of the drivers involved had to be taken to the hospital for treatment of what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

Sheriff's officials said a thin layer of slush/snow was beginning to accumulate on the roadway at the time of this crash.

I-41 southbound between State Highway 144 and State Highway 60 had to be closed for about an hour-and-a-half for cleanup.

Sheriff's officials said driving too fast for conditions appears to be the main contributing factor in this case -- but the crash remains under investigation.
