Clerk of court warns of potential scam involving man posing as deputy, calling people regarding jury duty

MILWAUKEE -- John Barrett, the Milwaukee County clerk of circuit court is warning about a potential scam involving requests for jury duty.

According to a statement from Barrett, an individual has been identifying himself as a Milwaukee County Sheriff's deputy -- calling people and giving his name and badge number -- contacting them with regard to jury duty and demanding money.

Barrett said his office has received a number of complaints regarding this.

“You’ll never be contacted about jury service without first receiving a summons in the mail,” Barrett said in the statement.

Barrett said his office will never ask a deputy to call people regarding jury service.

The Clerk of Circuit Court's Office communicates with jurors by mail or email -- and there would not be a requirement for payment without a court order, after a hearing before a judge.

If you are contacted by a man regarding jury duty, demanding payment, you're asked to contact the Clerk of Court's Office at (414) 278-4080.
