"It`s crazy!" First significant snowfall means we must once again learn how to drive in winter

OAK CREEK -- We saw our first significant snowfall of the season Saturday evening, December 10th through Sunday, December 11th and it meant getting back into the swing of things for drivers here in southeastern Wisconsin.

Just after 6:00 a.m. Sunday, crews at the Pilot Travel Center on Ryan Road in Oak Creek were hard at work.

"We got here around 6 in the morning. Woke up about 5," Manual Guerra said.

How long they would work shoveling snow was undetermined.

"When the snow stops! Pretty much all day," Guerra said.

Guerra said he'd have to work double time in order to keep his properties safe.

"We have to come back again like we did in other places," Guerra said.

His patrons said they appreciated the clean driveway as they made their way into the Pilot's parking lot from a slick highway.

"It`s crazy! I just dropped by husband off at the airport and we`re from Racine, so getting to the highway was crazy and then on the highway it wasn`t too bad but (the snow) was like Star Wars. It`s just coming at you and you can`t really see very well," Mary Walker said.

There was a steady flow of 25 salt and plow trucks out in Oak Creek all morning Sunday. Their work began Saturday night -- with several trucks out through the night.

The O&H Danish Bakery on S. 27th Street -- usually packed on a Sunday morning was quieter on this Sunday.

"Oh yeah! I think it's slow because of the snow. People came in and picked up their orders (Saturday) that were for (Sunday)," Dawn Rotes with O&H Danish Bakery said.

Officials encouraged drivers to take it slow on the snow-covered roadways. There were a number of crashes across southeastern Wisconsin Sunday.
