"I was very stunned:" Attempted sexual assault victim shares her story to warn others

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee woman has a warning for others after she said a man tried to sexually assault her in a locker room.

The 27-year-old woman said she was cornered by a strange man at the YMCA branch at 14th and North Avenue in Milwaukee. She said she is lucky to have been able to escape unharmed.

The alleged incident occurred on October 15th, but was not brought to the YMCA’s  attention until November 11th.

The interim CEO of the Milwaukee YMCA told FOX6 News that as soon as the alleged incident was reported, staff called the Milwaukee Police Department.  The YMCA also preserved and handed over all of its surveillance video recordings of the day in question.

"It just happened so fast. I didn't know what to do. I was scared," said the woman, who wished to remain anonymous.

What was supposed to be a relaxing time in the pool at the YMCA turned into a terrifying experience.

"When I got out of the shower, we met face-to-face. I just stopped like, I was very stunned," the woman said.

On October 15th, the woman said a man sneaked into the women's locker room -- and tried to sexually assault her.

"He forced me back into the shower and he closed the curtain behind him and blocked himself where I couldn't get out," the woman said.

That is when the woman said a mom and her child walked in -- and spooked the man, who ran off.

The woman has since reported the incident to Y staff and to Milwaukee police. An MPD spokesman said officers are investigating this case.

With the suspect still out there, the woman shared her story to help alert other YMCA families.

"That is the ultimate reason why I wanted to come forward. Because there are a lot of children who attend this YMCA," the woman said.

The woman told FOX6 News she is too terrified to return to that particular YMCA -- and plans to cancel her membership.

Jack Takerian, interim CEO of the Milwaukee YMCA said this in a statement to FOX6 News:

“The video the YMCA turned over to the Milwaukee Police Department on the day of the alleged incident, we are not seeing any such incident occur or a male enter a female locker room. The YMCA continues to cooperate fully with Milwaukee police."
