We Energies: Make sure natural gas meters, vents are clear of snow and ice

MILWAUKEE -- When you're out clearing the snow from your driveway and walk, take a few minutes for another important task. Clear your natural gas meter and any furnace vents of snow and ice. They often get covered up after significant snow events in southeast Wisconsin.

Why is this so important? Officials say you should keep furnace intake and exhaust vents clear of snow and ice to prevent build-up of carbon monoxide inside homes and buildings.

We Energies officials also say keeping the natural gas meter clear not only makes it visible to snowplows, but it also avoids putting stress on meter piping which can damage equipment and cause a gas leak.
