"Keep extra distance... go slow:" City of Milwaukee officials stress safe winter driving and parking

MILWAUKEE -- Before you go to bed you should double check if your car is on the right side of the street. Also, keep an eye up at the parking signs as parking restrictions are in effect across the City of Milwaukee -- and not moving your car could cost you.

City of Milwaukee officials say in order for snow plows to successfully clear the streets, these restrictions need to go into effect.

Not everyone is thrilled about it but they say their biggest concern is getting home safely.

"We're tough. We're all Wisconsin people so we can handle it," said Tim Eichinger, Black Husky Brewing Owner.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until Saturday. Owner of Black Husky Brewing, Tim Eichinger, says the effects of the storm could be seen inside his bar.

"It's a little slower than usual but we still have some regulars coming in braving the storm," said Eichinger.

On Friday, city officials announced alternate side parking will now go into effect throughout the weekend. The city is also implementing the "Four-Inch Rule." If you don't park your car properly you will face a fine.

Officials say these restrictions are not to raise revenue.

"This is for the greater good of this community to make sure that all of us can use our streets, that's why these restrictions are in place. Our hope is they will not need to put in place next weekend," said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

Eichinger says these are restrictions he warns customers about.

"We've been watching to make sure once it's four inches, then they have to go on the other side of the street so we are aware of that. You gotta watch that stuff," said Eichinger.

Parking inconveniences aside, some are more concerned about making it home in this storm.

"Just keep extra distance between the car in front of me and just go slow," said Mike Linser, Wauwatosa.

"I'll be heading out of here at 11:00 tonight. I'm hitting he highway kind of blind, we'll see how it goes. It's going to be an adventure," said Juan DeLacruz, executive chef at La Masa.

Again the mayor asks that people be on the lookout for specialized parking signs. This will be in effect throughout Sunday. About 300 pieces of equipment will be on the roads.
