Swastikas, other hateful expressions spray-painted onto gazebo in Port Washington park

PORT WASHINGTON -- Officials in Port Washington said a gazebo in Coal Dock Park was defaced over the weekend.

Police said on Sunday, January 22nd, they were contacted by an individual who was walking a dog and observed vandalism to the memorial pavilion in Coal Dock Park. The caller reported taking photos of the graffiti and posting them to social media in the hopes someone may have information. Upon returning home, the caller contacted police.

A responding officer found graffiti applied to the interior upper deck area of the memorial pavilion in the form of black spray-painted images including a swastika and profanity.

FOX6 News was told swastikas and other hateful expressions were spray-painted onto the walls.

The gazebo was constructed as a memorial to two men who lost their lives in water-related accidents back in 2012.

City officials removed the graffiti on Monday, January 23rd.

Police are investigating.
