Police discharge pepper spray, end hours-long standoff in Port Washington

PORT WASHINGTON -- Port Washington police ended a nearly six-hour-long standoff with a 48-year-old man by discharging rounds of pepper spray into the man's residence early Monday, January 30th.

The standoff began around 6:30 p.m. Sunday at a home on Grand Ave. near Garfield in Port Washington.

Original reports indicated the man in question was outside of his home firing a handgun and shouting what were described as suicidal statements. When officers arrived on the scene, the man retreated into his residence.

The Ozaukee County SWAT team was dispatched to the scene.

Multiple attempts were made to communicate with the man inside the home. Those attempts failed. Then around 12:15 a.m. Monday, the SWAT team discharged rounds of pepper spray into the home. A robot was then sent into the home -- and found the suspect suffering from the effects of the pepper spray.

The man was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment.
