NO charges after long night for Hartland residents: Police respond to report of man in home with gun

HARTLAND -- There was a heavy police presence overnight Saturday, March 18th in a neighborhood in Hartland.

Hartland police were called out to the scene near Oxford Drive and Bradford Way around 10:00 p.m. Saturday.

They responded to the area along with officials with the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department for a report of a man inside a home with a gun.

Police said this turned out to be a well-being check on a person inside the home.

"At first I wasn't aware of what's going on because I was laying out the bed, going to sleep. And then my daughter called me and said, 'Mom, are you aware of what's going on right outside your house?' And I wasn't at that point," Kathy Stevenson said.

Family members and neighbors were asked to leave their homes, as police descended on the neighborhood -- setting up a command post in the street. The Hartford Suburban Critical Incident Team was called in to attempt to make contact with the man.

Between 4:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. the critical incident team left and the police continued to secure the scene.

Around 7:00 a.m., the suspect came outside and was taken into custody by police.

"It was just a long night, a scary night, and again, it's always the unknown because, you know, something scary and dangerous is probably happening but you don't know the scope of it," Kathy Stevenson said.

"Came back at like 2:00 a.m. and we were still blocked off, so we had no real other choice besides getting a hotel -- so we stayed at a hotel last night," Christie Stevenson said.

Christie Stevenson said she and her family returned to their home around 9:00 a.m. -- nearly 12 hours after this incident began.

Police said there were no injuries, and no criminal charges are being sought on the suspect.
