Bicyclist dies after being struck by hit-and-run driver near 63rd and Capitol: "James did not deserve this"



MILWAUKEE -- A 63-year-old Milwaukee man died after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on Milwaukee' s northwest side. The victim's family has asked for help from the public as police search for the striking driver.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. Monday, July 31st  near 63rd and Capitol -- a very busy area.

Family members said the victim had just left his sister's house, and he was riding his bicycle home. He was struck as he was attempting to cross the street. The vehicle fled the scene.

"Part of me is gone. James was a father. James was a brother. James was a dad," Lillie Blissett said.

James Mckethan was many things to many people.

"They robbed James of his life. James did not deserve this," Kenyatta Blissett, Mckethan's stepdaughter said.

Surveillance video shows Mckethan crossing the street near 63rd and Capitol when he was struck by the vehicle that never stopped.



"It should sit in your heart that you killed somebody. That's cold-blooded. That's very cold-blooded," Kenyatta Blissett said.

The family said the driver's careless and callous actions are troubling.

"You even look back to see who you hit? If you didn't mean to do it, still have the conscience to turn yourself in," Kenyatta Blissett said.

Mckethan died at the hospital after the hit-and-run crash. On Tuesday, August 1st, his family gathered to remember his fun and light-hearted spirit.

"James, he was a good, loving man. Everyone is out here supporting him. He made everyone laugh. He was the life of the party," Kenyatta Blissett said.

Mckethan's wife on Tuesday made an emotional plea for the driver to turn themselves in.

"Please see my face see -- these tears. I'm begging you -- turn yourself in. That's all I'm asking. I'm hurting right now. I'm hurting," Lillie Blissett said.

Around 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, a vigil will be held in honor of James Mckethan. He did not have life insurance, so the family is working to raise money for funeral expenses. CLICK HERE if you'd like to donate.
