Police: Gymnastics coach arrested, accused of exposing child to pornographic material

BROWN DEER -- A 36-year-old West Allis man, a gymnastics coach at a Brown Deer gym has been arrested -- accused of exposing a child to pornographic material.

According to Brown Deer police, their department received a complaint on July 24th from staff at Infinite Gymnastics about possible inappropriate behavior occurring between a gymnastics coach, a long-time employee at the gym, and a student.

An investigation into the allegation was initiated and it was determined that no sexual assault had occurred. During the process of the investigation, it was determined that he coach did expose a child to pornographic material.

The coach was arrested and will be referred to the district attorney's office for possible charges.

Meanwhile, federal lawsuits against Michigan State University, USA Gymnastics and others related to a doctor accused of molesting dozens of athletes are moving into a mediation phase that could lead to a settlement.

Larry Nassar



The Lansing State Journal reports the 90-day mediation period was agreed to August 2nd by 18 attorneys attending a hearing in Grand Rapids. Nine represent the more than 115 women and girls who allege Dr. Larry Nassar sexually assaulted them.

An attorney representing the school says it agreed to mediation to expedite the case.

Nassar, a former Michigan State and USA Gymnastics doctor, faces nearly two dozen charges in Michigan. He has pleaded not guilty.

He will be sentenced November 27th in federal court after pleading guilty in July to three child pornography charges in an unrelated case.

USA Gymnastics



In June, the agency governing the sport, USA Gymnastics, issued 70 new recommendations to safeguard young gymnasts against sexual abuse. This, after reports the organization routinely failed to report allegations.

Infinite Gymnastics



In a statement, Infinite Gymnastics officials said its coaches are professional members of USA Gymnastics. They said since they reported the incident to police, "we have cooperated with their investigation since that time. We have terminated the employee and banned him from the property."
