"Flipped over on its top:" Multi-vehicle crash on I-43 causes major backups

MILWAUKEE -- A crash involving multiple vehicles, including a semi, shut down I-43 northbound near Hampton Avenue for nearly five hours Friday afternoon, September 1st. Two left southbound lanes were also closed for a period of time.

FOX6 News has learned one person has been injured.

James Devries lives in Sheboygan. He rushed out the door as soon as his son called from the scene of the crash to inform him he was OK.

“He says the car is flipped over and says it’s totaled and I said don’t worry about that are you OK," said James.

Harrison Devries says he was driving his PT Cruiser when he was hit from behind.

"My car swerved and flipped over on its top. After that I had to get out of my seat belt and crawl out of my car," said Harrison.

Like all the others involved, he suffered only scratches and bruises.

"I'm just grateful that I’m still alive and I can keep going," said Harrison.

While crews cleaned up the mess, traffic was rerouted near Capitol and Brown Deer Road. Close to 7:00 p.m., crews finally cleared the scene.

Which for some, may now have a new meaning.

"I told my wife I'm going to church this weekend. He's my only son and thank God he wore his seat belt," said James.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office is now leading the investigation. It's not yet known what led to the crash.
