Act now: Few property tax payment options remain for City of Milwaukee residents

MILWAUKEE -- Time is running out if you want to file your property taxes by the end of 2017. Those paying at Milwaukee's City Hall on Friday, December 29th came prepared to wait in line.

"I think they said about 45 minutes," said Anthony Britton, a Milwaukee taxpayer. "Just to make sure, get everything straight and get the new year started out right."

Behind the scenes at Milwaukee Treasurer's Office however, processing is slower than in 2016.

Jule Smith told FOX6 News she paid her property taxes at her bank on December 18th. But City of Milwaukee records indicate it has not posted yet.

"I called back my bank and had a long talk with them and they said, we actually show that they received it," Smith said.

The deputy city treasurer said the reason behind the backup is a new computing system.

"It's from Tyler Technologies, they're under contract with the Department of Administration," said Jim Klajbor, Deputy City Treasurer.

As of Friday afternoon, Tyler Technologies had increased its computing speed.

"The system will move faster, which then will allow us to make sure we can post payments and get receipts printed," Klajbor said.

The city reassures taxpayers that any payment received by December 31st will be credited to 2017.

"Anything that's postmarked on or before the 31st will be credited as a 2017 payment as well," Klajbor said.
