Driver, 70, suffers apparent diabetic reaction while driving, leading to backups on I-41 near Pilgrim Rd.

MENOMONEE FALLS -- A 70-year-old driver from Illinois suffering from a diabetic reaction while driving led to backups on I-41 near Pilgrim Monday evening, Jan. 29.

According to Germantown police, around 5:30 p.m., multiple calls came in regarding a possible impaired driver headed southbound on I-41 from Holy Hill Rd. Witnesses said a blue pickup truck was traveling at slow speeds, weaving across all lanes of traffic.

The truck was reported to have possibly hit the center median cables near Holy Hill.

Witnesses reported some semis in the area attempted to box in the vehicle.

A Germantown officer located the vehicle on I-41 and attempted a traffic stop -- activating his lights and sirens, but the vehicle wouldn't stop and continued southbound on I-41 as officers followed.

The vehicle struck the center median cables near Lannon Rd. and State Highway 167 east, and lost the front driver's side tire. The vehicle continued southbound on I-41 on three tires, traveling at or above highway speeds with sparks coming from the rim.

Officers were unable to deploy tire deflation devices due to the erratic driving in this case.

The vehicle finally stopped on I-41 near Main St. in Menomonee Falls.

The driver was taken into custody with assistance from Menomonee Falls police. An investigation revealed the man, 70, from Illinois was having a diabetic reaction while driving. He was taken to the hospital.

It was discovered he had an expired Illinois driver's license, and he'll be cited for operating without a valid license.
