Dangers of shaming your kids: A punishment strategy that could leave a lasting impact

MILWAUKEE -- Sometimes we see it on social media -- other times just out in public. Parents shaming their kids for bad behavior. But is that really the best punishment route? Child development expert Jessica Lahner with Carroll University joins Real Milwaukee with alternatives to shaming.

1. Focus on behavior, which provokes healthy feelings of guilt, rather than focusing on the person, which provokes shame.

2. Respond with empathy. When kids feel like their parents understand them, they can't feel unworthy at the same time.

3. Seek connection.

4. Repair. Parents won't always get it right, but can apologize and repair relationships with kids when they mess up.
