'I cried all night:' Brother, parents in custody after girl, 9, fatally shot

MILWAUKEE -- A boy and his parents are in custody after a 9-year-old girl was shot and killed Saturday, March 10. Police identified her as Miyanna Jelks, and said she was accidentally shot by her minor brother inside a home near 38th and Ruby.

Jelks was rushed to the hospital, where she died. It's a tragedy that has left many with questions about how this could've happened.

There were balloons and stuffed animals outside the home Sunday.

For nearly five hours Saturday afternoon, Milwaukee police blocked off the home to collect evidence.

Police said Jelks' brother was taken to the Milwaukee County Children's Court Center. Jelk's parents, a woman, 29, and a man, 32,  were arrested on multiple charges.

"Oh my. So children playing with guns? That's not good," said Lachelle Domineck, neighbor. "Parents -- keep these guns away from the children. I'm keeping my babies next to me -- very close. I cried all night and was so glad it was not my daughter."

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office says Jelks is the first child killed as a result of gunfire this year.

Milwaukee police will present the case to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office in the coming days.
