MILWAUKEE -- A Racine police officer has been placed on administrative leave, and a suspect, 32, is in custody after an officer-involved shooting at a pub in Racine early Saturday morning, March 24.

Racine police said they were called to the pub called "Tropical Paradise" on Dr. Martin Luther King Dr. near Kewaunee St. around 3 a.m. -- regarding a fight involving a gun.

Upon arrival, officers heard gunshots actively being fired, police said.

"I was watching a movie and we heard three shots at one time," said Larry Sherrod, who lives nearby. "From what I've seen it was a situation that went bad."

Officers found the male suspect, identified as Jeremiah Golden, with a gun in his hand and gave him commands to drop his weapon. Police said the suspect did not comply and was fired upon by one the officers. The suspect was struck and received a non-life threatening injury as a result, police said.

"He was yelling a lot of insane things to the police, and they were telling him to get down, and he was saying, 'are you going to shoot me? Are you going to shoot me? Shoot me!'" said Sherrod.

The suspect was taken into custody after he was treated for his injury at the hospital.

Jamison Hiler

"Jeremiah Golden -- that my cousin. He a good guy, but at the rate of violence going on in this area, you've got to have a gun on you," said Jamison Hiler, suspect's cousin.

Jarnail Siengh, who owns Olympic Liquor just down the street, said the shooting was unfortunate.

"It's happened before in the neighborhood, but I understand that it's a bar business, people are drunk, and it happens," said Siengh.

Managers at Tropical Paradise declined to comment but neighbors said they want to see justice.

"I hope they solve it, and I hope the person who got shot is OK and comes to their senses," said Sherrod.

Racine police investigators are interested in any additional information that anyone may have about this crime.
