MFD's hazmat crew called to Greendale police station for exposure of unknown substance



GREENDALE -- What started as a retail theft investigation ends with two officers being transported to the hospital.

Greenfield police say as they were investigating a retail theft at Southridge Mall on Friday, May 25 when they discovered two suspects -- a man and a woman -- were occupying a stolen vehicle. They were taken into custody and taken back to the Greendale police station.

As officers searched the car they removed a purse and two officers were exposed to an unknown substance.

One officer started experiencing symptoms of exposure while on scene and another began experiencing similar symptoms once back at the police station.

Both officers were given narcan and taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. The Milwaukee Fire Department's hazmat team was called to the police department for decontamination.

The officers have since been released and both suspects were taken into custody.

The investigation is ongoing.
