CUDAHY— A 57 year old man is in stable condition at Froedert Hospital after being injured in an industrial accident on Saturday night.

At 5:20pm a 30 pound piece of metal fell from a sign at ATI Ladish Company hitting the man in the head. He suffered a laceration to his head and an injured shoulder.

The Cudahy Fire Department and Police Department responded to the accident along with the South Milwaukee Fire Department. Flight for Life was then called and transported the man to Froedert Hospital.

“He was conscious and breathing, alert on arrival and he was transported,” Melissa Maker of the Cudahy Police Department said.

Police did not know what caused the metal to fall Saturday night. “That’s under investigation right now. I’m not sure if we’re going to do the investigation or if Ladish company is doing the investigation at this time,” Maker said.

The man’s name has not been released as police are still trying to notify them about the accident.

In the afternoon, the family of Darius Simmons held a vigil outside the family’s house. Neighbors and community activists gathered and decried the shooting that killed Simmons.

“Innocent children do not deserve to die!” said Rev. Leondis Fuller of the New Covenant Baptist Church, “I don’t care what the situation is, death and killing is not the answer!

According to the criminal complain, Patricia Larry told police her son was taking the garbage cart back from the curb when Spooner confronted him. Larry told police the man accused Simmons of breaking into his house and demanded the teen return stolen property including shotguns. Spooner then pulled out a semi-automatic pistol.

“(Simmons’) mom wants everyone to know he had his hands up, standing in front of him, and (Spooner) shot him,” said Simmons’ aunt, Betty McCuiston.

Other relatives said Alderman Bob Donovan is partly responsible. Spooner met with the alderman the morning of the shooting. Donovan said Spooner complained about multiple break-ins.

“I said ‘did you call the police?” Donovan said, “He said ‘oh I did’ but for whatever reason, he wasn`t satisfied with what the police did or didn`t do.”

Simmons’ uncle, Leon Larry, said Donovan could have done more to calm down Spooner that morning.

“I hold a grudge with that man because this man went to him with his problem and he didn’t respond to it and my nephew is dead behind it,” Larry said.

Activists like Fuller called for tighter gun laws but for the most part, avoided assigning blame and instead called for peace.

“It’s time for us to change,” Fuller said.

Simmons’ family has set up a memorial fund through Tri-City National Bank. The fund will help pay for the teen’s funeral which will be in Arkansas.

Saturday, the judge gave Spooner a $300,000 bond. He is due back in court June 11.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — The distributor of a popular coffee maker sold under the Black & Decker label is voluntarily recalling the product after 68 people reported suffering cuts and burns, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday.

Nearly 1,300 consumers also have reported the handle on the coffee pot breaking during use, the agency said.

Applica Consumer Products Inc., a Miramar, Florida-based company, distributes the under-cabinet model of coffee maker for Black & Decker’s Spacemaker line of kitchen products. The coffee maker was sold nationwide from July 2008 until last month, when the recall was deemed necessary.

Nine models of the Black & Decker Spacemaker coffee maker are involved in the recall. Officials estimate around 159,000 of the coffee makers were sold.

The particular models involved are the 12-cup coffeemaker version with a molded handle the same color as the machine and a silver metallic bracket running around the glass near the bottom, the safety commission’s recall announcement said.

The agency says customers who own the coffee makers should stop using them immediately. Applica Consumer Products is offering customers who own one of the recalled models a free replacement.

The recall includes model numbers SDC740, SDC740B, SDC740BR, SDC740C, SDC740DIS, SDC740R, SDC750, SDC750C and SDC750DIS. The model number is printed on the underside of the coffeemaker.

A group called Housing Resources, Inc. lends tools to homeowners through its tool loan program. 

“This program is close to my heart.  We understand that people want to keep their homes up and have pride and ownership,” said Housing Resources Inc. Executive Director, Trena Bond. 

People pay a membership fee of $25.00 a year, and then, they can borrow tools whenever they need them throughout the year.  People use the tools for home repairs and renovations. 

“Wonderful asset to the community.  This is an opportunity for people to be able to contribute to the community standards in the neighborhood,” said 1st District Alderman, Ashanti Hamilton.

The organization says it stocks a variety of hand and power tools from screwdrivers, hammers, saws and a long list of other items. 

As long as you live in the city of Milwaukee, you can sign up for the program, but you must be a homeowner. 

Among the speakers, Congressman Paul Ryan, Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, and state senator Van Wanggaard.  It was all in an effort to drum up support and excitement about the election.

“Let’s prove it.  It’s ours for the taking.  We can do this.  It’s ours for the taking,” Ryan told conservatives.

Down the road in Racine, Democrats scrambled to hold an impromptu rally after a couple hundred showed up for an organized canvass kick off.  Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin and recall candidate John Lehman were among the speakers.  

“We got this 50/50 district, a lot of intelligent energized people and all going at it together,” Lehman told Fox 6.

Both sides agree that the winners of Tuesday will be those who are best at getting their supporters to the polls.  Democrats and Republicans say the interest in this election is unprecedented. 

While Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett spend the day with Former President Bill Clinton in Milwaukee, Governor Walker was with South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley visiting workers in Appleton and Sussex.

Clinton told the crowd at a downtown riverfront park that Tuesday’s election is about much more than the state of Wisconsin and what’s best for its residents.

He said people nationwide are looking to Wisconsin as an American battleground, and states that are recovering economically have embraced “creative cooperation,” not “constant conflict,” a reference to Walker’s proposal last year that effectively ended collective bargaining for most state workers. The recall was spurred by anger over that move.

Walker was campaigning Friday with South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who has called herself a “union buster” and considers her state’s low union membership rate an economic development tool.

Governor Walker says if his recall is rejected by voters, his administration will continuing growing businesses. “The main thing holding small businesses from across the state from adding more jobs is concerns about the recall, and concerns about the idea that we may go backwards,” said Walker.

Governor Haley told workers at Quad Graphics that the eyes of the nation are on Wisconsin. “They are watching,” She said. “Are you going to reward the courage that he showed are you gonna respond to the results he gave? Are you gonna go back, and let it go back where it was? I have faith in the people of Wisconsin.”

Governor Walker says ,like him, Governor Haley is a lawmaker who stands up for the taxpayers. He says she balanced South Carolina’s budget without raising taxes, something the governor is touting as part of his campaign as well.

Clinton is the biggest Democratic name to visit Wisconsin in the truncated recall campaign. President Barack Obama has kept his distance from the union fight as his own re-election efforts near this fall. Wisconsin, with its 10 electoral votes, is a key part of his path to victory.

Walker has been leading in polls released by the Marquette University Law School during the past two weeks. The most recent one released Wednesday showed Walker with a 7-point edge. The margin of error is 4.1 percentage points.

The recall election has been unlike anything seen before in Wisconsin, with at least $62 million spent by the candidates and outside groups so far, based on a tally released Thursday by the government watchdog group the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.

Walker was the top spender at $29 million with Democrats including Barrett spending about $4 million. Outside groups have spent $21 million and issue ad groups that don’t have to disclose their spending have put in at least $7.5 million.

The Pittsburgh Pirates scored six runs off Randy Wolf in the third inning, then went on to pound the Brewers 8-2 on Friday night. And Ryan Braun left the game after the seventh inning with another injury worry, aggravating the lingering tightness in his right Achilles tendon and straining his right hip.

“The danger in trying to play through an injury constantly, is it’s easy to re-irritate it,” Braun said. “Your body also compensates so it’s easy to hurt something else. I don’t think it’s too bad, but it doesn’t feel too good right now.”

Kevin Correia (2-5) gave up two runs and five hits in 5 2-3 innings for the Pirates, who have won six of their last seven games. The Pirates came into Friday’s game with a 4-38 record at Miller Park since the start of the 2007 season.

“We didn’t play a good game today,” Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. “I still think the four games (in Los Angeles) did an awful lot for what we need to do going on.”

Nyjer Morgan hit a solo home run in the first inning for Milwaukee, snapping his Major League record of 138 straight plate appearances without an RBI to start the season. But Morgan’s misplayed ball in the outfield played a critical role in the Pirates’ big inning.

Corey Hart hit a solo home run, his 11th this season.

The Brewers were coming off a four-game road sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers — the team’s longest winning streak this season — but didn’t land back in Milwaukee until early Friday morning.

“I don’t think we had too much wind after landing at seven in the morning,” Braun said. “You just turn the page and remember the fact that we played really well the last four days and hopefully tomorrow we get back on track.”

Wolf (2-5) went six innings, giving up the six runs and eight hits, with four walks and five strikeouts.

“The one inning killed me,” Wolf said. “That’s pretty much the story.”

Morgan homered off Correia in the first, giving Milwaukee a 1-0 lead and snapping his RBI drought. The previous record was 125, by Herb Adams of the Chicago White Sox in 1950.

Wolf gave up back-to-back triples to start the third, as Andrew McCutchen drove in Josh Harrison.

Pedro Alvarez struck out, but Wolf allowed an RBI single to Neil Walker for a 2-1 Pirates lead.

Matt Hague singled, then Rod Barajas singled to drive in Walker — and Barajas took second base on the throw home from Braun. Wolf walked Jody Mercer to load the bases, and Correia hit a soft grounder that allowed third baseman Aramis Ramirez to throw out Hague at the plate.

With the bases still loaded, Jose Tabata lined a ball to center. Morgan initially broke in, then realized he was headed the wrong direction and made an awkward attempt at a leaping catch. The ball sailed over his head for a double and three runs scored, giving the Pirates a 6-1 lead.

Wolf finally got Harrison to fly out to end the inning.

Hart homered in the sixth, cutting the lead to 6-2.

Braun nagging Achilles injury was tested in the sixth, when he legged out an infield hit and stole second base, sending him limping back to the dugout during a pitching change. But Braun stayed in the game until the top of the eighth, when he was replaced.

“It’s just a matter of trying to manage it and hope it’s not too bad,” Braun said. “Some days I feel good. Some days not so good. But obviously I always feel like I can contribute even when I’m less than 100 percent.”

Law enforcement says the mother of his children began to date another man.

Guadarrama visited her and found the boyfriend caring for his kids and investigators say the fugitive snapped.

He’s been on the run ever since. US Marshals believe he may be going from Mexico to Wisconsin and staying with relatives in places like Kenosha and Racine.

Early Tuesday morning, May 29th, a customer walked into the Petro Mart near Broadway and Pleasant in Waukesha and found 56-year-old Nayyer Rana on the gas station floor. He had been shot twice. Police said it may have been a robbery gone bad.

Within 24 hours of the homicide, Brookfield and Elm Grove police say they arrested an individual who may have been involved in the crime. A handgun was recovered from a Waukesha residence in connection with this arrest. It is now being examined by experts at the Wisconsin Crime Lab.

Qureshi feared it’d be impossible to find the person responsible for the tragedy. He also feared it was his fault. Qureshi says the store didn’t have any cameras on Tuesday because of a remodeling project. “I feel so bad. That’s why I feel so bad, and I was praying so they can get this guy.”

The suspect’s name is being withheld pending a decision on charges.

News of a break in the case provided relief for Petro Mart customers like Elizabeth Schubert.

“It makes me feel a whole lot safer. I work at a bar down the street and I actually refused to walk to my car alone last night, just knowing I was a younger girl walking alone with cash,” Schubert said.

Schubert says she used to come to the Petro Mart every night for gas and soda because it was open. “When they didn’t know who it was, at first I thought, I’m never coming back here because I didn’t know it was safe, but now I’m coming back,” Schubert said.

The Rana family expressed their appreciation to law enforcement Thursday, releasing a statement saying, in part: “The family is relieved that a suspect is now in custody. The family has complete confidence in the Waukesha County District Attorney’s Office and believes that the individual who committed this senseless crime will receive the justice he deserves, through this process.”

The Rana family had offered a $3,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Police say the arrest was made before a single tip came in.

According to the criminal complaint, Simmons was retrieving the garbage from the curb when he was confronted by Spooner. Spooner, the victim of a multiple burglaries, alleged Simmons was the culprit of at least one of the burglaries.

Spooner asked Simmons for his belongings back, including two shotguns. Simmons denied having anything to do with Spooners’ stolen property. Simmons’ mother Patricia Larry told police she also told Spooner they had nothing to do with his stolen property.

The criminal complaint says that’s when Spooner pulled out his gun and fired two shots at Simmons. When police arrived Spooner said, “Yeah I shot him.”

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death as a homicide after examining the gunshot wounds on the dead body.

The First Degree Murder charges 75-year-old Spooner faces carries a possible sentence of life in prison.

According to the criminal complaint just before 10 a.m. Thursday Spooner confronted Simmons in front of the victim’s home. Police say the defendant accused the teen of burglarizing his home and demanded his stuff back.  When Simmons denied his involvement the criminal complaint says his mother told Spooner he should “just go home.”  Instead the court document says Spooner pulled out a gun and shot Simmons from less than five feet away — then shot at him again as he was running away.

We’re told the shooter has lived in his home for about 40 years.  Over the last decade Spooner developed a friendship with the alderman.

“He tells me ‘Bob I was robbed again, burglarized two days ago’, and he suspects the people next door.”, says Alderman Donovan. “In my conversation with him he just was resigned to deal with the situation as best he could.”

Donovan tells FOX6 Spooner was well liked by the community and has no criminal record. In addition to a burglary earlier this week he has also been diagnosed with lung cancer and lost his wife a few years back. Donovan says, “He just struck me as burdened by the cards that life is dealing him.”

Simmons family friend Juanisha Williams says the teen did not burglarize his neighbor and did not deserve to die. “I was the sister. Always take care of him. I gave him money when he need it. That was my heart.”

The family says the stories going around about Simmons’ involvement in burglarizing Spooner’s home are all lies. They’re holding a vigil for Simmons on June 2nd at noon at the corner of Arrow St. and Comstock St.

Jay Patterson from New Berlin’s Patterson Orchards was hoping to avoid a tough year when we talked to him in March as temperatures hit the 70s.

When the “June drop” came mid-May, Patterson lost a ton of produce. He says, “We’re just praying to keep what we have.”

The loss of these crops means higher prices at the grocery store. Patter said, “My guess, right now, maybe 30% maybe 40%, you might see higher increases than that.”

Patterson, a third-generation apple grower, estimates his total yield will be down 60% or more.

He says the Patterson orchard has had years with half the typical harvest, but could shore up supplies through wholesalers.

Sue Edman from the Milwaukee Election Commission tells FOX6, “As of 7:00 p.m. Thursday night, 17,123 absentee ballots have been processed in the City of Milwaukee.”

Absentee voting has kept election workers busy. Calls and questions have been pouring into the Milwaukee Election Commission during the early voting period.

We caught up with Barbara Kaus, who headed to vote after seeing Former President Bill Clinton in Pere Marquette Park. “I got to shake President Clinton’s hand so I was very happy about that,” she said.

The Government Accountability Board wants to remind voters that mailed absentee ballots must be postmarked by election day.

Zimmerman’s wife testified at the bond hearing that they had limited funds available since she was a nursing student and Zimmerman wasn’t working.

“He can’t sit back and obtain the benefit of a lower bond based upon those material falsehoods,” Lester said.

Defense attorney Mark O’Mara said the fact that Zimmerman and his wife never used the money for anything indicated “there was no deceit.”

Prosecutor Bernie De la Rionda described the Zimmermans’ testimony as “misleading.” “This court was led to believe they didn’t have a single penny,” said De la Rionda. “It was misleading and I don’t know what words to use other than it was a blatant lie.”

Prosecutors also said Zimmerman had failed to surrender a second passport, but the judge dismissed that concern as the equivalent of someone who has lost a driver’s license, applies for a new one and then finds the old driver’s license.

Zimmerman is pleading not guilty to second-degree murder and claims self-defense. Zimmerman shot Martin in February during a confrontation at a gated community of townhouses in Sanford, Fla., where Zimmerman lived and where Martin was visiting his father’s fiancee.

The delay in an arrest for 44 days prompted protests nationwide and led to Sanford’s police chief stepping aside so emotions could cool down.

At Friday’s court hearing, De la Rionda and O’Mara also asked a judge to stop the public release of witness names and statements made by Zimmerman to police officers. Those documents normally are part of the public record under Florida law.

“What’s occurring, unfortunately, are cases are being tried in the public sector a opposed to in the courtroom,” De La Rionda said. “We are in a new age with Twitter, Facebook, and all these things I’ve never heard of before in my career. Everybody gets to find out intimate details about witnesses that never occurred before. Witnesses are going to be reluctant to get involved.”

A consortium of more than a dozen media groups, including The Associated Press, asked the judge to ignore the request, saying such records are presumed to be publicly available under Florida law.

Rachel Fugate, an attorney for the Orlando Sentinel, cited the Casey Anthony trial as an example of a highly publicized case in which a jury was able to be seated despite intense media coverage. The Florida mother was acquitted last year of killing her
2-year-old daughter.

Discovery in Florida has traditionally been open … and Florida hasn’t encountered problems seating juries and giving defendants fair trials,” Fugate said.

O’Mara said Friday on a website that he doesn’t expect the case to be ready for trial until next year.

O’Mara said he expects to call on 50 witnesses who need to be deposed before he decides whether to file a “stand your ground” motion which would ask for a hearing before a judge without a jury.

At the hearing, Zimmerman would argue self-defense under the Florida law which gives wide latitude to use deadly force rather than retreat in a fight if people believe they are in danger of
being killed or seriously injured.
