“It exploded in a flash nearly 10 times as bright as anything we’ve ever seen before,” said Bill Cooke, of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office.

NASA astronomers have been monitoring the moon for the past eight years, looking for explosions caused by meteoroids hitting the lunar surface. It’s part of a program to find new fields of space debris that could hit Earth. NASA says it sees hundreds of detectable lunar meteoroid impacts a year.

None however can match the size of the explosion they say they saw March 17. NASA says the meteoroid was about 40 kilograms and less than a meter wide, and it hit the moon’s surface at 56,000 mph. It glowed like a 4th magnitude star, NASA says, thanks to an explosion equivalent to 5 tons of TNT.

“It jumped right out at me, it was so bright,” said Ron Suggs of the Marshall Space Flight Center.

Cooke says Earth was pelted by meteoroids at about the same time, but they hit the moon because it has no atmosphere to protect it.

“We’ll be keeping an eye out for signs of a repeat performance next year when the Earth-Moon system passes through the same region of space,” Cooke said.

If you’re wondering how there can be an explosion on the moon, without oxygen, NASA has the answer for you. It says the flash of light comes not from any type of combustion — as we typically think of explosions — but rather by the glowing molten rock at the impact site.

The horse, ridden by veteran Gary Stevens, dashed the Triple Crown hopes of Orb, which finished fourth at Pimlico Race Course in Maryland.

The winning time over 1 3/16 miles was 1:57:54.

Oxbow came into the Preakness as a 15-1 shot.

“We didn’t get a lot of respect after the Derby,” said Stevens, 50, who came out of retirement earlier this year.

Stevens in January took a call from Oxbow trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who he told him “I’m going to have a colt for you.”

That colt was Oxbow.

“His mind was right” on Saturday, said Stevens, who didn’t expect his horse to go to the lead so early. “He exploded home coming off the turn.”

Itsmyluckday finished second and Mylute was third.

Orb, the Derby winner and a 3-5 favorite at the Preakness Stakes, got a clean start from the inside post but soon became boxed in on the rail where he started. He was hemmed in among the other colts, unable to stake a position on the outside as he had in rallying to victory at Churchill Downs.

The third leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, is set for June 8 in New York.

Stevens, a Hall of Fame jockey, said Oxbow maintained a “nice, easy pace.”

“What you saw out there was the way we trained,” Stevens said. “His ears were up so he was telling me he was comfortable and it was just like we worked out.”

It was the third Preakness victory for Stevens, who had settled into a second career as a race commentator before the call from Lukas.

“He’s like a brother, a coach and a father figure to me,” Stevens said of Lukas, who now claims six Preakness winners.

Of those injured, at least five or six were “trauma victims,” the dispatcher said.

The accident occurred during the Hiker’s Parade at the annual Trail Days festival, which honors the famed Appalachian Trail, in the town near the Virginia-Tennessee border.

Dalton Thomson told CNN affiliate WCYB that he was pushed out of the way of the oncoming car by a hiker.

“We all looked back. There were hikers on top, hikers under the car,” said the boy. “It was unreal. Nothing could be as scary as that.”

“This is important. This shows people what this country is about,” Leitner continues.

On Saturday, May 18th, Leitner is part of the culmination of Milwaukee Armed Forces Week with the 10th annual “Support The Troops” motorcycle ride.

Rollie Timm started the event with a few friends one decade ago.

“This is something we need to do, as an American, as a biker, and, just, a patriot. It’s time that we stand-up for something positive, and support these men and women,” Timms explains.

When the riders reach their destination, at Milwaukee’s Harley-Davidson Museum, they’ll continue to congregate during an afternoon of activities.

But, first, they gather at Hal’s Harley-Davidson in New Berlin where they begin with breakfast.

Here, a pancake breakfast fundraiser is helping the effort to build the state’s first Fisher House, in Milwaukee.

Curtiss Peck says a Fisher House is akin to a Ronald McDonald House, but, for veterans’ families.

“We have the family members coming to visit their loved ones, who are being treated at the V-A hospital, and so we will be able to house up to 16 families for no cost, to them. It’ll cost them nothing to stay at a Fisher House,” Peck explains.

Another way to help those who help protect our freedoms.

“We’re owing this so people can feel safe in their neighborhoods.  The first sign of disorder we know is the litter,” says officer Scott Lesniewski.

In the Washington Park neighborhood, the cleanup was organized by some of the newest members of the force.  Just 5 months after graduation, rookie cops Christopher Moore and Dana Rodriguez scoured a block near 33rd and Vliet.

“You get to see the good people in the neighborhood.  They’ll let you know what’s going on.  It helps us a lot,” says officer Moore.

The cops say while it feels good to make the neighborhoods look cleaner, their experience meeting the neighbors they serve is an even greater benefit of the day.

“The community helps a lot.  We’re not going to be able to solve anything unless people come forward and talk with us.  We want to make the neighborhood safe and we can do that with the community,” says officer Rodriguez.

Milwaukee Police sent crews all over the city and held community barbeques and lunches in many of the communities they serve.

“We’re part of the neighborhood.  We are part of the city and we all have to take pride on our city,” says officer Lesniewski.

Crime tape blocked off several areas of the intersection near 23rd and Keefe. Detectives collected evidence while, neighbors looked on in concern.  At sunrise balloons were erected in the very same location,  marking the spot of an unfortunate incident.  “It’s sad, you know another young kid dies,” said resident Charles Williams.

Police said an 18-year-old male was attempting to commit an armed robbery and he was shot and killed. The incident has sparked mixed emotions. Williams said, “It’s still a death to me, still somebody lost their life.” Homeowner Larry Chin added, “I think anybody has the right to defend themselves.”

Authorities said the person who shot the robbery suspect was cooperating with detectives. The thought of a potential robbery combined with shooting in the area is hitting folks pretty hard. “There was shooting, people are scared to come outside and stuff like that,” said Williams. Chinn added,” Like any homeowner I’m concerned and I’m checking on my tenants.”

Chinn is extremely disheartened and echoes the sentiment of many in the neighborhood, that sadly violence is occurring all too often, “It’s got to the point where it’s a common thing. It’s bad you feel sorry about it but it’s not nothing unusual.”

No other suspects are being sought. Police said the person who shot the armed suspect who was trying rob him is a Milwaukee man in his early 60′s. His actions will be reviewed by the Milwaukee District Attorney’s Office on Monday.

When the emergency crews arrived on the scene, they found a fully-engulfed car fire. The persons inside the car told authorities gun shots had been fired at the vehicle and that they struck a utility pole while trying to get away from the gun shots.

Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board will be at the site of the crash this morning, the agency said.

The two Metro-North passenger trains, heading in opposite directions, collided Friday evening in southwestern Connecticut, damaging both trains and leaving some people critically injured.

The accident occurred when a train heading from New Haven to New York City derailed around 6:10 p.m. That train struck the other train in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Metro-North spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said.

Gov. Dannel Malloy told reporters Friday night that five people were “critically injured,” one of whom was in “very critical condition.”

Two of the 26 people treated at Bridgeport Hospital were in critical condition, spokesman John Cappiello said early Saturday. Of the total patients at the hospital, 10 have been released.

St. Vincent’s Medical Center, also in Bridgeport, treated 44 patients from the incident, hospital spokeswoman Lisa Sanzone said. One of those was in critical condition. A total of 36 patients have been released from the hospital, she said.

By early Saturday, 46 of the 70 people who had gone to hospitals had been released.

A passenger in a middle car of the New York-bound train, Chris Martin, said his car went dark after the crash.

He then heard someone yell over the intercom for “all the doctors up front.”

Martin said his crowded train was evacuated. Everybody on his train was physically fine, he said, but many were shaken emotionally. He said he saw injured people outside the train.

Brian Alvarez said he saw the wreckage.

“I saw this one car and it was completely destroyed, and they were pulling people out of the car,” Alvarez said. “… They were all bloody.”

Power was shut off along the line and service has been halted in the area.

Amtrak also announced Friday night that it had suspended all travel between New York and Boston indefinitely after the crash. Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch said such travel headaches could persist for weeks because the two tracks affected by the derailment — which are both “shot right now” — may take weeks to repair.

Because of a bridge replacement project, those two tracks are the only way in and out of New York City by train from that part of Connecticut.

“This is our pipeline to New York City, and it’s going to be shut down for some time,” the mayor said.

To their credit, Ron Roenicke’s men battled back thanks to a pair of 3-run homers by Aramis Ramirez off winning pitcher Jaime Garcia, but the bottom four spots in the lineup were a combined 0 for 15. Game two of the series is Saturday night at 6:15.

The truck suffered severe damage as the cab of the semi and the trailer split. The trailer is now wedged underneath the bridge.

Traffic was not affected on I-94 and cars can still get through on Mitchell Blvd.

A state bridge inspector has been called in to assess the bridge. A towing company is working to free the trailer.

The driver of the semi was issued a citation for failure to obey an official sign. It’s a three point violation and a $178.80 fine.

No one was injured in the incident.

The officer responded to a complaint of loud music coming from the suspect’s car.

When questioned, the suspect punched the officer in the face and fled on foot.

The officer suffered minor injuries.

Lieutenant Brian Murphy and Officer Sam Lenda, the first two policemen on the scene of the Sikh Temple shooting, were awarded the honor.

Mayor Steve Scaffidi said, “It’s a chance for the community, for the first time, to thank Brian and Sam for the heroism and bravery that they showed on August 5th.”

The award is given out each year to the person, or in this case persons, who best represent the city.

“I couldn’t ask for anything more,” said Murphy. “It’s just been such an unbelievable ride and now to have the entire city recognize me before I leave, I’m as happy as can be.”

Lieutenant Murphy is set to retire in June.

Murphy was shot 12 times during the attack at the Sikh Temple. Lenda took down the gunman with one shot.

“This could’ve been much worse than it was, as awful as it was, and it’s because of Brian Murphy and Officer Lenda,” said Congressman Paul Ryan

Officer Lenda acknowledged he was honored to receive the recognition, but said humbly that the night was about Lieutenant Murphy.

“I would beg to differ,” said Murphy. “Sam has been an inspiration to so many people and as a lifelong resident of Oak Creek, he epitomizes being Citizen of the Year.”

Back in July of 2004, he was accused of seeing rival gang members in a bar then shooting and killing two men outside. Investigators say it happened in the area of 948 W. Hayes St.

Flores-Lopez is accused of waiting outside the now closed down bar after closing time and ambushing the rival gang members and fleeing.

Police believe he’s in Mexico City, Mexico. But say people in Milwaukee may know exactly where he may be hiding out there.

While some are grumbling about the construction, others are smiling.

“I always knew we’d be right on the interstate someday, so that would be nice to see what it’s like,” says Val Secor, General Manager of The Dish.

That’s because the interstate, in essence, is moving to 27th Street, where restaurants are hoping to see more customers.

“We just hope people stop in and try it out,” says Secor.

The closure will be an inconvenience to many drivers who are coming into Milwaukee for one of three big events this weekend. There’s the Kenny Chesney concert at Miller Park in addition to graduations at Marquette University and UW-Milwaukee.

Closure locations:

• I-94 WEST (NB) will be closed from 27th Street ( at Racine / Milwaukee County line) to College Avenue.
• I-94 EAST (SB) will be closed from Rawson Avenue to Drexel Avenue.

In addition, multiple I-94 WEST (NB) and I-94 EAST (SB) entrance and exit ramps will be closed during the culvert replacement.

Freeway detour routes:

• Traffic on I-94 WEST (NB) will be directed to exit at 27th Street (at Racine / Milwaukee County line) and head north to College Avenue. Turn right (east) on College Avenue and continue to I-94 WEST (NB) entrance ramp.
• Traffic on I-94 EAST (SB) will be directed to exit at Rawson Avenue, head west on Rawson Avenue, and turn left (south) on to 27th Street and continue to I-94 EAST (SB) entrance ramp.

General Mitchell Airport detour routes:

Additionally, the westbound Airport Spur will be closed to traffic exiting the General Mitchell Airport during the I-94 freeway closure. Detour routes for the spur closure are as follows:

Traffic wanting to travel I-94 WEST (NB) towards downtown Milwaukee will be directed to Howell Avenue, turn right (north) on Howell Avenue and head north to Layton Avenue. Turn left (west) on Layton Avenue and continue to I-94 WEST (NB) entrance ramp.

Traffic wanting to travel I-94 EAST (SB) towards Chicago will be directed to Howell Avenue, turn left (south) on Howell Avenue and head south to Drexel Avenue. Turn right (west) on Drexel Avenue and continue to I-94 EAST (SB) entrance ramp.

Traffic wanting to travel to I-43 / 894 (WB) towards Madison / Beloit will be directed to Howell Avenue, turn right on Howell Avenue and head north to Layton Avenue. Turn left (west) on Layton Avenue and continue to 27th Street. Turn right (north) on 27th Street and continue to I-43 / 894 (WB) entrance ramp on the right.

“We understand that there’s some inconvenience that goes along with this but we also know that getting this work done very efficiently and very quickly in one operation is something very conducive to the large interstate project,” said Luck.

Future construction updates and schedule:

• The Rawson Avenue I-94 WEST (NB) entrance ramp will be closed to traffic starting at 6 a.m. on Monday, May 13, and will reopen in late fall.
• Rawson Avenue, between 13th Street and 20th Street, will be closed to traffic Tuesday, May 28. Demolition of the existing Rawson Avenue bridge is scheduled to begin the evening of May 28.
• The new Rawson Avenue bridge is scheduled to be rolled into place mid-June and scheduled to reopen to traffic in late June.
• All remaining exit and entrance ramps to I-94 will close late-June and remain closed until late fall when the interchange is scheduled to open.
• All closures are weather dependent.

The move by Illinois lawmakers came the same day that Ohio’s attorney general certified a petition for a proposed amendment that would allow marijuana be used for industrial, medical and therapeutic purposes.

If approved, Illinois and Ohio would join 19 states and the District of Columbia that have some variation of a medical marijuana law.

Under the approved law in Illinois, a four-year trial would establish 60 dispensing centers across the state and allow doctors to prescribe 2.5 ounces of marijuana to a patient every two weeks.

To be prescribed medical marijuana, patients would need to have one of 42 conditions, including cancer and HIV, according to the legislation. Patients also would undergo background checks.

Gov. Pat Quinn has not indicated whether he will sign the bill.

Meanwhile, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine on Friday certified a petition for a proposed amendment allowing for medical marijuana, the first step in an attempt by the Ohio Rights Group to put the issue to a statewide vote in 2014.

“Without passing upon the advisability of the approval or rejection of the measure to be referred, I hereby certify that the summary is a fair and truthful statement of the proposed constitutional amendment,” DeWine said in a letter to the Ohio Ballot Board.
