Contact 6: Cyber Monday and online shopping tips

Cyber Monday is a big day for online shoppers, as many retailers offer free shipping to entice people to purchase holiday gifts online. If you are planning on doing some online shopping this holiday season, FOX6's Contact 6 says there are some things you need to look out for, besides the deals.

The National Retail Federation's holiday survey says consumers plan to do 36 percent of their holiday shopping online, but when shopping online, Contact 6 reminds you to be on the lookout for scams.

Some tips from Contact 6:

Shop on trustworthy websites. Look for sites with names you are familiar with, and if you're not sure, check the company's report on the Better Business Bureau website (www.bbb.org).

Confirm that the website is secure before you buy. Always look in the address box for the "s" in https://, and in the lower right corner for the "lock" symbol, which will indicate you're on a secure site.

Pay with a credit card. Under federal law, charges made on a credit card can be disputed if the item is never received, or if someone steals the credit card number and uses it.

Review the return policy. You don't know if that holiday sweater will fit Uncle Fred, so know what he'll have to do to return it.

Verify when to expect shipped items. If no delivery time is stated, stores have up to 30 days to get the item to you, and if you're ordering it on Cyber Monday, you might not receive your purchase in time for Christmas.

Keep documentation of your order! That way, if you have to file a complaint with Contact 6, or if there are any problems at all with your purchase, you'll have all the necessary paperwork in hand.
