County parks busy as people take advantage of warm weather

MILWAUKEE -- Southeastern Wisconsin is seeing some unseasonably warm weather, and little snowfall so far this winter, and many are taking full advantage of the opportunity to get out and play some rare January golf in Wisconsin.

At Milwaukee's Currie Park Golf Course Monday, the only complaint was the breeze that was pushing around golf carts a bit as golfers took advantage of the mild day. The Currie Park course is one of seven in the Milwaukee County Parks System that is finding itself unusually busy at an unusual time of year! "It's unique to be able to golf this time of year, and people are eating it up!" Guy Smith with the Milwaukee County Parks System said.

Smith says during the past warm-weather weekend, the County earned about 16,000 unexpected dollars from the 1,200 rounds of golf played county-wide. "It's great! You've got golfing in the morning and in the afternoon you can enjoy ice skating," Smith said.

Downtown Milwaukee's Red Arrow Park ice skating rink has had its share of skaters, carving all the ice they can before temperatures fall. "The weather is beautiful out here. I have the day off and I have nothing to do, so it's great. I can't believe how nice it is," Barb Washkuhn said.

On Milwaukee's east side, many are grateful they're not dealing with the parking hassles snow can create. "It's definitely tough to find a spot, especially when there's snow. Without the snow, it's much, much easier. I don't have to worry about getting towed with the snow emergencies. The parking spots don't fill up as easily," David Bruss said.

Tee times are likely to fill up fast for Tuesday, with 50s in the forecast.
