DOT puts brakes on request for Bob Uecker Way

MILWAUKEE -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is putting the brakes on a bipartisan request to honor Milwaukee Brewers broadcasting legend Bob Uecker by naming a pedestrian bridge near Miller Park after him.

A bipartisan group of 20 state lawmakers on Monday asked the DOT to rename a pedestrian bridge near Miller Park as "Bob Uecker Way.''

But Department Secretary Mark Gottlieb said in a reply dated Wednesday that it doesn't have the power to make that change. He says either the Legislature must take action to name the bridge or the Brewers could be asked to erect a sign on their property, but off the state right of way.

Democratic state Sen. Tim Carpenter of Milwaukee says he will introduce legislation to name the bridge after Uecker.
