Jeep fully engulfed after striking building in Waukesha

WAUKESHA -- The Waukesha County sheriff's, police and fire departments responded to an accident early Sunday morning near Center Drive and Sunset Drive where a vehicle was on fire after striking a building.

Officials say a 62-year-old Waukesha man was driving a 1998 Jeep Cherokee northbound on Center Drive when he crossed the center line and struck a 2003 Ford Explorer. No one in the Explorer was injured as a result of this accident.

The man continued traveling northbound on Center Drive, and struck several mailboxes before crossing over Sunset Drive and striking a building at 900 Sunset Drive. The gas meter for the building was damaged, and the Jeep Cherokee was fully engulfed in flames when officials arrived at the scene.

Officials say the building was unoccupied at the time of the accident.

Sunset Drive and Center Drive were closed for a time while the Jeep's fire was extinguished, and We Energies officials were able to turn off gas to the building.

Officials took the man into custody for OWI - first offense, and hit and run property damage only.

Waukesha County sheriff's officials continue to investigate this accident.
